I've been a fan of the Tour de France a long time. Even through all the doping scandals, I have remained a fan of cycling and in awe of many cyclists, especially those on Team Discovery. Though the team is officially disbanded, I am still interested in what the team members are up to. Or I was until this from Levi Leipheimer. It appeared in Sports Illustrated. I won't be reading that anymore either (curse them for putting Papelbon on the cover too).
I have worked for years to educate people looking for a dog on how to find and evaluate a quality breeder. To advocate never buying from a breeder is incomprehensible to me. I agree there are a lot of unethical breeders out there but to paint them all in one stroke is grossly unfair.
I'm too disgusted to write any more on this topic.

Geez, I don't read anything in the link that suggests Levi says anything negative about Breeders. It seems his organization is interested in helping communities spay and neuter pets to help control populations, and also suggest adoption as an alternative. Spreading the word about adopting unwanted pets from shelters seems a lot different than suggesting that Breeders are mean or evil. There will be those who will buy from breeders and there will be those who want companionship. I think it's a bit overstated to suggest he's after breeders, but that's just me.
Read the text of the ad. It states, "never buy them from a breeder..." I'm all for spay/neuter and adopting from shelter, and very opposed to pet store purchases, but it also says to not buy from breeders and that is something I cannot support.
This is my beef (ha) with PETA. They are very extreme and sweep with a broad hand. By making blanket statements they do nothing to solve the problem of the bad breeders. In anything there are bad and good. There are purposes for purebred dogs and good breeders should be supported. I'm a kennel dog/cat person myself, but I've never eliminated the possibility of owning a purebred in the future. However with two cats and a dog (all neutered, much to E's dismay) we aren't getting any new housepets soon anyway.
You're right Jenn. PETA's real goal is the end of animal ownership. Those of us who value the companionship of pets will never fit into their plan.
I have read the ad, and I still can't make the logical leap from "never buy from breeders" to "breeders are bad people." I also don't understand how PETA got involved either. Again, I think folks are going too far, too fast. But that's cool. I'm not really trying to pick a fight. I just can't make the leap that you're making. I see how supporters of breeders and supporters of shelters might have mixed political purposes.
Ryan, the PETA logo is at the bottom of the ad. I never said Levi is claiming breeders are bad people. Your first comment says Levi isn't saying anything negative about breeders. He is saying never buy from breeders. That sounds pretty negative to me.
I agree with Kim...saying never buy from breeders is pretty darn negative to me. Nothing wrong with a breeder. I own mutts that I've adopted from the shelters, but I would consider a breeder one day if I ever wanted a pure bread dog. I don't like the cover either and Kim, you have every right to be disgusted with it!
